Games Design Document (GDD)

The Game Design Document (GDD) is a highly descriptive document of the game design. This GDD consists of many aspects including:

  • Game overview – title, genre, game perspective, game mode(s), target audience, core idea, goal and topic of the game
  • Game background and game flow – background story and characters starting story
  • Game Play – objectives, game logic, mechanics, game resources, game progression and economies
  • Game elements – environment, characters and collectable weapons
  • Game play I/O controls and GUI Interfaces
  • Visual and audio features
  • System parameters and requirements
  • Creativity and special enhancements in game concept

Technical Design Document (TDD)

The Technical Design Document (TDD) is a specification for all the technical aspects of the game outlined in the GDD. This TDD consists of many aspects including:

  • List of features
  • Choice of game engine
  • Schedule
  • High level diagrams
  • Art tools
  • 3D objects, terrain & scene management
  • Collision detection, physics & interaction
  • Game logic and artificial intelligence
  • Networking
  • Audio and visual effects
  • Delivery platform & hardware/software requirements
